Through the charity, Racing to School, our Year 6 pupils recently enjoyed a fabulous visit to Southwell Racecourse, where they explored and applied their mathematical knowledge in a real setting.

Pupils were given access to a range of areas which included: the weighing room, where metric and imperial measures were discussed, estimated and calculated; the jockeys’ changing rooms, sauna and medical room, to look at kit and facilities essential for maintaining high sports and safety standards; the stable yard area, where horses and riders were being signed in under secure conditions; the racecourse itself, to look at distances; the parade ring where trundle wheels were used to compare distances and finally the stands to watch a race firsthand.

The Racing to School staff also provided an insight into the range of careers linked to the world of horse racing.
