Train to teach with the TVTSA

12th December 2016

TVTSAAre you considering a career in teaching? As a member of the Trent Valley Teaching School Alliance (TVTSA), Tuxford Primary Academy and schools across the region, are offering the opportunity to gain experience in the classroom and apply for one of 50 School Direct trainee places for 2017 entry.

What is School Direct?

School Direct allows you to train to teach in a school of your choosing – with the expectation that you’ll then go on to work there on completion of the programme.

All TVTSA School Direct places lead to qualified teacher status (QTS), a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) validated by Nottingham Trent University and credits towards a masters qualification.

You can expect to spend the majority of your time training in the classroom, alongside outstanding teachers and supported by specialist mentors, helping you to build your confidence in a school environment.

‘The support from my mentor was fantastic, although the year was intense I knew I could always ask for advice and I wasn’t pressured to take responsibility for classes until I was ready.’
James Lillyman, School Direct maths trainee

Courses are generally one year, full-time, and available across secondary and primary phases. Dependent on your experience, places are offered on either a salaried and non-salaried basis. Non-salaried UK or EU trainees are eligible to apply for a loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. Substantial tax-free bursaries are also available to trainees in certain subject areas.

‘Being employed in the school is great because I know the systems and expectations required of me. It means that in my NQT year, potentially the most challenging year in my career, I have already built relationships with some of my students and am teaching content in lessons that I have taught before and had the opportunity to reflect on and improve for the next lesson I teach it.’
David Jordan, former School Direct trainee and now NQT in psychology

Gain classroom experience

If you’re not sure whether teaching is the right choice for you or perhaps you need more classroom experience, then you could apply for the Teaching Agency’s School Experience Programme (SEP).

You can apply for the SEP at one of our open days, available in both primary and secondary schools across the TVTSA partnership. TVTSA’s school experience days involve observations of lessons, the opportunity to meet current trainees and mentors, and discuss the various routes into teaching.
